Iraqi Kurdish fighters hope to aid their fellow Kurds in preventing the "Islamic State" from capturing Kobani. But an Iraqi politician says the fighters' involvement in the besieged border city is on a short-term basis.
U.S. airstrikes have been directed against ISIS positions in the Kobani area this week. But U.S. Central Command said there were no further strikes in the area overnight into Friday. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, speaking Friday after the Cabinet's decision to authorize airstrikes and the deployment of special forces in Iraq, said ISIS had "effectively declared war on the world" and posed a threat to Australia and its people.
In Syria, two airstrikes west of Hasakah successfully struck multiple ISIL buildings, including an air observation building and staging areas, officials said, and another airstrike northeast of Dayr az Zawr successfully kobane news struck an ISIL staging area and an IED production facility. Witnesses of chlorine gas attacks described them as carried out by helicopters, which only Syrian regime has. All fingers point to Assad.
Long before the battle for Kobanê was under media spotlight, the CWI highlighted the need for building everywhere in the region democratically-run, non-sectarian bodies as the basis for organising a mass popular defence not only against IS, but also against any other religious extremist groups, against the brutal and sectarian forces of the Syrian and Iraqi regimes, and against imperialist intervention - the latter being largely responsible for the growth of the jihadist gangs now assaulting Kobanê.
Violent clashes took place between the 2 sides after an IS unit sneaked into an area east of Kobane on Wednesday. The YPG have also targeted 3 x IS vehicles between Baghdak and Qara Mog villages in the eastern coutryside, killing at least 5 Jihadists. US General Lloyd Austin, who heads US Central Command (Centcom), said on Thursday that he believed the airstrikes against IS were getting results and having the desired effects”.
In June, the group took control of a sprawling complex that had been the heart of Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons programme, Al-Muthanna State Establishment. There may also have been chemical weapons buried kobane news or abandoned elsewhere, that were not destroyed by US forces or the Iraqi military. Outgunned and outnumbered, they have so far kept the heavily-armed jihadists at bay, with help from US-led air strikes.
Müslüm fully supports and is proud of his brother. He himself is no stranger to political activism either, having spent three years in prison for his political involvement in the Kurdish struggle. He was deported to Cyprus after his release and was only allowed to return to Turkey on the condition that he would not engage in politics anymore. This doesn't seem to bother him too much.
Refugees in Suruc, Tukey, have told The Daily Mail how relatives and neighbours were beheaded by the militants, while another spoke of how he had seen "hundreds" of decapitated corpses in the besieged kobane news town. On Friday, the UN Syria envoy warned the hundreds still trapped in Kobani will be "massacred" by militants if the town falls, where only a small corridor remains open for people to flee.
Bayik told Der Standard the only solution for the peace process was to bring in outside mediators, possibly from the United States. "We have been at war with Turkey for years. Neither we nor Turkey reached our goal through war. So there must be a political solution," he said. The supplies were "intended to enable continued resistance against the attempts to overtake Kobane," CENTCOM said in a statement referring to 'Daesh' fighters.
That belief played out in Turkey's policy toward Syria. For example, Turkey was loathe to allow pro-PKK militias to provide direct armed support in Kobane. But that strict prohibition was coming at a cost: President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his governing AK Party were alienating a large chunk of the electorate as Kobane burned. But Unluhisarcikli said Erdogan may have dodged a bullet, recently, when Iraqi peshmerga fighters went to help Syrian Kurds in Kobane drive back ISIS.
