How Kurdish Protests Flared Up & Spread Across Europe

He has written for The Economist, The Guardian, kobani, kobane, protest The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, Independent Voices and More Intelligent Life.kobani protests in turkey There were conflicting reports about how the 25-year-old protester was killed in the clashes in Mus, with the Hurriyet newspaper saying he died of a gunshot wound after being caught in crossfire. But NTV television said he was killed after being struck in the head by a tear gas cannister fired by police to disperse the protesters. In neighboring Syria , days of airstrikes have been unable to stop militants on the verge of capturing a strategic town on the Turkish border. Although a ceasefire was declared in March 2013, after decades of armed struggle the PKK is seen as a terrorist group in Turkey. Most papers are highly critical of the protests. Centre-right Hurriyet denounces them as a "threat to peace", warning they might endanger talks between the government and Kurdish rebels. In Iraq, Islamic State militants reportedly shot down an Iraqi military attack helicopter, killing the pilot and co-pilot. In the latest swing of Iraq's sectarian pendulum, resentment is again growing among the Shia majority - repressed under the Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, aggressively dominant under elected premier Nuri al-Maliki, and now ruled by a government seemingly unable to stop the advance of Islamic State. Some European nations have joined the fight against ISIS, but the Kurdish protesters want tougher action. Turkey, which is a Nato member, has inherited more than 180,000 refugees who fled Kobani, but its reluctance to defend the town sparked clashes around the country. Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters kobani, kobane, protest who burnt cars and tyres as they took to the streets mainly in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish eastern and southeastern provinces. Clashes also erupted in the biggest city Istanbul and in the capital Ankara. The battle to stop Isis capturing the Syrian town of Kobani continues as the Islamists attempt to consolidate their power on the doorstep of Europe. The town has become the focus of increasingly desperate efforts by Kurdish forces backed kobani, kobane, protest by US air strikes to stop the militants taking control. Control would also put Isis in striking distance of Turkey itself, where there is growing anger among Kurds at the Government's perceived inaction fighting the Islamists. Now we face the group that calls itself the Islamic State (Isis), the latest terrorists to confront us. And yet again we have met them with an emotional response based on the horror deliberately generated by their acts. We agree to bomb them and insist we will never speak to them because they are quite unlike any terrorist group we have ever met before. We're doing some maintenance right now. Army Major Curtis Kellogg said Baghdad had asked for helicopter support near Fallujah to push back militants west of the capital Baghdad. The low-flying helicopters give the US military greater capacity to identify individual targets and provide close air support to Iraqi troops in combat, suggesting close cooperation with forces on the ground. But they also expose US troops to far greater risk from ground fire. He said the Kurds were in contact with both the US-led coalition and Turkey in search of more assistance. We need help from the international community. Either we finish them (IS) or they will finish us,” he said. I do kobani, kobane, protest not think we will be able to return home soon. I'm afraid we will end up as refugees and I and my brothers will not be able to complete our studies. Life in Turkey is too difficult and we do not know what will happen. In a show of solidarity for the embattled Kurds, protesters in France, Britain and Germany today called on their governments to provide further assistance to the city's Kurdish fighters. Although the US has conducted air strikes on targets within the city, ISIS has tightened its grip on the town in recent days and thousands of Kurds face massacre should Turkey not open its border to allow the delivery of arms.
