Fighting between Kurdish forces and Islamic State (Isis) militants for the Syrian border town of Kobani fuelled rising tensions inside Turkey on Tuesday as thousands of protesters took to the streets to voice anger and frustration about the inaction of the Ankara government.

Within 24 hrs, my uncle came to our house to warn that Isis militants were inside Kobani. We were so terrified to hear that and thought of the massacres that usually followed any Isis attack. The Syrian army had pulled out of our town long time ago to leave Kobani facing its destiny alone. We left all our valuables at home amid heavy clashes between Kurdish fighters and Isis.

Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala accused the demonstrators of "betraying their own country" and warned them to stop protesting or encounter "unpredictable" consequences. But the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party kobani,kobane,protest (PKK) called for members and supporters to take to the streets to protest against the IS offensive. Meanwhile, Turkish border police reportedly stopped as many as 300 Kurds who had crossed into Turkey from Kobane.

Isis has shown much aptitude in the use of social media to spread its message. It has now issued 11 rules for journalists covering the group. The first injunction is to swear allegiance to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Here is the list in full. A 25-year-old man died in Varto, a town in the eastern province of Mus, and at least half a dozen people were wounded there in clashes between police and protesters, local media reported. Two people died in southeastern Siirt province, the governor was quoted as saying by CNN Turk Television, and another died in neighbouring Batman. Curfews were imposed in five predominantly Kurdish southeastern provinces after the protests, in which shops and banks were damaged.
The Sunni militants want to seize the dams to bolster their claim they are building an actual state; the dams are key to irrigating the country's vast wheat fields and providing Iraqis with electricity.
