Air Strikes Hit Isis Positions As Jihadists Push İnto Kobani
By 2 October, ISIL succeeded in capturing 350 Kurdish villages and towns, 39 creating a wave of some 200,000 displaced Kurds, most of whom fled across the border into kobane news Turkey Kurdish and Free Syrian Army forces, supported by American and Arab airpower, continue to defend the city against the ISIL attack as of early November.
The Prime Minister's proposal is to include in the safe zone certain areas in al-Hasakah,” as well as Jarabulus, Ayn-al Arab (Kobane), Tel Abyad, Idlib and Afrin in an effort to protect Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens living in Rojava and northern Syria. The line or area will stretch from northern Latakia on Syria's Mediterranean coast to Iraq. It is potentially a land grab, and suspicions are heightened over this being the case when we hear the Prime Minister saying the exact lines of the safe zone might vary or fluctuate depending on humanitarian needs or crises.
The international perception that the Turkish regime made backroom deals with IS against the Syrian Kurds was gaining momentum. Triggered by Erdoğan's policy in Kobanê, the recent mass protests and riots by the Kurds of Turkey (clashes between Kurdish activists and Turkish State forces, kobane news but also with Kurdish Islamic fundamentalists, as well as Turkish far-right nationalists), led to 44 deaths. These events reminded the regime that sustaining a backdoor war against the Syrian Kurds was difficult to do, without renewing another conflict with the Kurds of Turkey.
This weekend's protests do not bode well for the Turkish government. In addition to supporting Kobane, many protesters chanted slogans in support of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which both Turkey and the United States have declared a terrorist organization. Riot police stood by ready with water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas launchers, but ultimately did not intervene.
The bombardment of the border area will likely delay the entry of the peshmerga” to Kobane, said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman, whose group relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria. Kobane has become an important symbol of the battle against IS, an extremist Sunni Muslim group that has seized swathes of Syria and Iraq, committing atrocities and declaring an Islamic caliphate”.
As appalling and threatening as IS's actions are, it is not the only danger hanging over Kobanê and Rojava. Backroom deals with imperialism have to be rejected, as they run the danger of creating a qualitative change in the character kobane news of the fighting on the ground. Fire burns on the street near a police vehicle with a water cannon during clashes between riot police and demonstrators outside of the Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) in Ankara.
The population of Kobane had been swollen by tens of thousands of refugees from outlying areas fleeing the genocidal force of IS (ISIL/ ISIS). During IS's war on the region, in addition to the beheadings of UK victim Alan Henning, there have been mass beheadings of Kurdish people who opposed IS's advance. If Kobane falls, the IS will next target the Mursitpinar border crossing to Turkey to further consolidate its presence on the Turkish border.
But this is not Stalingrad, and you can't do that sort of simple cost-accounting. To understand why that air strike was worth it, you have to factor in all the times that video was shared online, all the gloating that went on from YPG supporters, Kurds, Shi'ites, and others who have reason to hate and fear Islamic State. My friend Annibale, who keeps up with a very interesting range of sources around the world, said he was getting messages from minority areas of northern Pakistan cheering for the video.
The betrayal of the people of Kobane is symptomatic for the situation in the World. The kurds have been betrayed by the colonial powers like USA and UK for more than 50 years. Now it is Islamic Turkey who overlook the slaughter of the kurds at their border with Syria, and do not lift a finger. The YPG have been holding out for weeks against ISIL's offensive, backed by dozens of US-led air strikes against ISIL positions.
Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters who burnt cars and tyres as they took to the streets mainly in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish eastern and southeastern provinces. Clashes kobane news also erupted in the biggest city Istanbul and in the capital Ankara. Drone's-eye view: A video released by Islamic State, apparently shot from a drone, shows what appears to be Kobane.
